Bernhard T. Mittemeyer, M.D., was named interim president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Bernhard T. Mittemeyer, M.D., today was named interim president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Mittemeyer will begin his duties July 1. He will serve until a replacement for M. Roy Wilson, M.D., M.S., can be found. Regents and Interim Chancellor Dr. Donald R. Haragan will develop a search process in the near future to select a new Health Sciences Center president.

Wilson will leave the institution June 30 to become chancellor of the newly consolidated University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center.

鈥淒r. Mittemeyer has served the Health Sciences Center well for 20 years. He knows the university and he knows the people and the communities of the campuses that we serve,鈥 said L. Frederick Francis, chairman, 麻豆天狼副利院 Board of Regents. 鈥淚 know his dedication and commitment to Texas Tech and that he will continue the goals and vision that Dr. Wilson so ably has championed in the areas of research, education and patient care.鈥

鈥淎s executive vice president of the Health Sciences Center during the early years, Dr. Mittemeyer provided valuable leadership for the institution,鈥 said Interim Chancellor Donald R. Haragan. 鈥淚 worked closely with him at that time and am confident that he will lead during the interim period with enthusiasm and integrity and will maintain the forward momentum of the university.鈥

鈥淚 am honored to have been asked to serve as the interim president and am excited to work with the talented faculty and staff at our campuses in Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock and the Permian Basin鈥 said Mittemeyer on his appointment. 鈥淎 great deal has been accomplished in our young history, but we have much to do. We must continue the goals and visions that our departing president, Dr. M. Roy Wilson has championed across the parameters of medical education, research and patient care. Throughout our five professional schools, we鈥檒l continue to keep excellence in education as our highest priority and simultaneously advance our focus and efforts in basic and clinical research.鈥

Mittemeyer served as executive vice president and provost of the Health Sciences Center from 1986 to 1996. In 1996, the Health Sciences Center established the $1 million Bernhard T. Mittemeyer Endowed Chair in Community Medicine in his honor.

Prior to coming to the Health Sciences Center, Mittemeyer served 28 years in the U.S. Army earning numerous awards and decorations. He served as surgeon general of the Army from 1981 until his retirement in 1985 and also served as commanding general of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
